Here you can find a very long list of courses in a wide variety of subjects, from Humanities, Arts and Social Science to Engineering. In every one of them you can also find a list of essential books, texts and a list of assignments related to the course. The MIT is DEVELOPING a very new concept of learning and knowledge, and all of this IS for free. You can download every paper and assigment you want, AND keep it in digital format on your computer, however you can't download the whole book . An excellent initiative of the MIT!!.
The other site I recommend is the web site of the Nature magazine: Here you can fin a lot of articles of this famous science magazine. However you won't get the articles of the last number if you don't have a subscription, but you can see the articles of OTHER numbers. Also is a pretty nice site, colorful and easy to navegate.
